Therapy Services

About our non-profit:

Iron Mills Ranch Therapy Services is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to share the valuable atmosphere of ranch life and the presence of horses with those who would not normally have the opportunity to be in such an environment. We believe in the power and effectiveness of horses on the mind, body, and soul. As the saying goes, “nothing compares to the therapy a horse can give”.

Our board members are Doug and Lexi Mills, Jaimie Sawyer, and Shannon Ivins. We all share an incredible love for horses and wanted to create something that would provide the community of Whidbey Island access to the many benefits they provide.

The use of Hippotherapy

The term hippotherapy refers to how occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology professionals use evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement as a therapy tool to engage sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes.

The average horse walks at a rate of approximately 100 steps per minute.  Just 5 minutes on a walking horse represents 500 neuro motor inputs to the patient.  In a typical therapy session, 15 to 25 minutes of equine movement may be incorporated by the treating therapist – which represents 1500 to 2500 neuromotor inputs to the patient.

Incorporating hippotherapy into an occupational therapy, physical therapy or speech language pathology session can serve as a powerful tool for the facilitation of the key neuromotor systems that support function.  Skillfully applied equine movement, under the direction of a therapist, can offer the patient the opportunity for complex motor learning.  Hippotherapy is combined with other standard therapy tools/strategies in an intervention plan designed to address the treatment needs of the client.

-American Hippotherapy Association

The unique movement of a horse has proven extremely valuable in increasing control and balance, core strength, and muscle development. It is so similar to the human gait that, for those who struggle to walk or cannot walk, it imitates the rhythm needed for their own independent steps. The use of hippotherapy in an OT/PT/ST session has been proven to improve trunk strength, fine and gross motor skills, postural control, sensory integration, attention and communication skills, visual perception, and more! The unique relationship formed with a horse can also help interpersonal relationships, and improved self-esteem and self-regulation. The innumerable benefits of a horse are only multiplied when coupled with OT/PT/ST treatment.

Here at Iron Mills Ranch we have an Occupational Therapist or Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in EVERY session. Every client receives a formal evaluation from one of our Occupational Therapists who then sets goals to be worked on each session. All of this sets us apart from Equine Assisted Therapy and Therapeutic Riding. The use of hippotherapy is part of a one-on-one medical treatment implemented by a team that includes a licensed, credentialed therapist.

Everyone should have the opportunity to experience the healing powers of a horse. At Iron Mills Ranch we want to share that possibility with those who need it the most! As our motto goes, IMRTS is “where horsing around is the tool to success!

Outpatient Clinic

IMR Outpatient Pediatric Occupational Therapy Clinic is very unique in that it is located on a working horse ranch. Our clinic is an outbuilding overlooking the boarding facilities of Iron Mills Ranch. This setting gives us the opportunity to work on client’s goals while surrounded by animals and the amazing ranch atmosphere! We are a completely functional outpatient clinic currently with two Occupational Therapists (OT) and a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) on staff. Evaluations are performed with one of our OTs. Sessions are generally performed by Jaimie Sawyer, COTA/L.

H.O.O.F. (Horses Offering Outlasting Friendships)

H.O.O.F. is a venture/experience we devised to share our love of horses, and everything they do for us. Spending time with a horse can be very beneficial for physical, mental, and emotional health. Although horses are obviously very therapeutic, H.O.O.F. is not a therapy service, it is simply an opportunity to learn and grow with these incredible animals we call friends. It is a chance to be around horses, learn some basics on horse care, etiquette, grooming, anatomy, and some riding. Each H.O.O.F. experience is run by Shannon. Shannon has been around horses her entire life and was also a Certified Veterinary Technologist for 6 + years. It is a unique opportunity for to be around horses for those who would not normally get the chance. We love sharing these incredible animals with you!

Important need to know:

  • Our arena is outdoors, dress/prepare accordingly. i.e. jacket/coat in the spring, sunscreen and water in summer. If weather is not tolerable, we do have the indoor clinic space to use when needed.
  • That being said, closed toed shoes are to be worn at all times
  • Our horses are very well trained, and very well behaved, however, they are still large animals and should be treated with respect. No running or yelling around the horses.
  • Always ask before approaching, petting, or touching any horse
  • Please do not feed horses, no matter how much they pretend they are starving 😉
  • 2 porta-potties on site
  • Wooden bleachers are provided for seating near the arena.
  • Please note, this is primarily (but not exclusively) a pediatric service, for our safety and the horses’ we do have weight restrictions based on client ability and mobility for mounted experiences.
  • Most of all, remember to have fun!

And Our Crew!

Jaimie Sawyer, COTA/L

Jaimie is newer to the horse world, but has always had a love for horses and is the lucky co-human to miss Apache. Ever since her rotation with a clinic that incorporated the use of Hippotherapy, she knew that was something she wanted to do as well. Jaimie is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, graduating from Pima Medical Institute in 2019. Although she was born and raised in Arizona, her heart belongs to the Pacific Northwest. She is so excited to bring this unique therapy tool to the island and community she loves!

Doug Mills

Owner of Iron Mills Ranch, Doug has been around and working with horses his entire life. He grew up right here on Whidbey Island! Doug and his wife Lexi started IMR 4 years ago as a boarding facility and they have continued growing the boarding as well as the Iron Mills name. Now adding Therapy Services and bringing a new adventure to the property with a great team of individuals. Doug wants IMR to be a place for horse lovers for years and years to come!

Alexis (Lexi) Mills

Also owner of IMR, Lexi grew up in Southern California. She is one of 6 kids and is even a twin! She also has 4 amazing kids of her own. Lexi has been an ABA therapist for 20 years. She and Doug moved to Whidbey Island in 2019, where she is now a life skills para educator in Oak Harbor School District. In her downtime, Lexi and Doug board horses, as well as care for their chickens, ducks, 4 cats, and 3 dogs. Lexi has a genuine love for working with kids and animals. With her experience and skill set, she is an extremely valuable resource to have on our team!

Shannon Ivins, RT(R)(CT)

Shannon has been on a horse since before she could walk! Horses have always been her passion. She has been lucky enough to own Miss Apache Anne for all of Apache’s life. Both Shannon and Apache have had the opportunity to volunteer with a facility that utilized the amazing tool of hippotherapy in the past and are very excited to help get it started here on Whidbey. Shannon currently works at the hospital in Medical Imaging, but likes to spend her free time helping out with Iron Mills Ranch Therapy Services. Along with being a side walker, and horse handler, Shannon also heads up social media and web design.

Anna Bailey M.S. OTR/L

Anna is an Occupational Therapist, who graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2020. She has a love for working with children and animals. Anna was born and raised in Central Whidbey.
